This new chapel for Sohelou Village, an off-grid village up on the hill, was built by its villagers regardless of religions, using reclaimed wood from the old chapel and sand from the nearby stream. Taking its cue from their timber houses, the chapel is lifted off the ground with additional low, long openings for cross ventilation and diffused daylight following their behavior of sitting on the floor. The meaning of “14 Stations of the Cross” showing Jesus’s path to crucifixion which emphasizes the heaviness of the cross was translated into the design as a huge inclining cross on the roof.
